The short version
Split·App has no backend. There is no server for your data to go to and no account to create. Everything — reading the receipt, splitting the bill, remembering where you left off — happens in your browser, on your device.
Your receipt photo
When you photograph or upload a receipt, it's processed entirely on-device using an in-browser OCR (optical character recognition) engine. The image is never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any server — because Split·App doesn't have one. Once you close or refresh the tab, the photo is gone.
What's stored, and where
To let you resume a split after an accidental refresh, Split·App saves your in-progress session (item list, people, split configuration) to your browser's localStorage — a storage area that never leaves your device and is never sent anywhere. It stays until you clear your browser's site data or storage for this site, and it's readable only by this site, in this browser, on this device. It is not a cookie and is not shared with any third party.
Network requests this site does make
"No server" means no server that your data touches — but a couple of ordinary, static resources are still fetched over the network, like any website:
- Fonts. The IBM Plex typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. Your browser makes a standard request to Google's font servers for those files, subject to Google's own practices.
- OCR language data. The first time you scan a receipt, the browser downloads the English text-recognition model used by the OCR engine from its public CDN, then caches it. That request fetches a static file only — it never includes your receipt photo or anything you've typed.
Neither of these requests includes your receipt, your split data, or anything else you enter into the app.
Payment links
When you generate a payment link (UPI, PayPal.me, Venmo, or Cash App) to settle up, Split·App builds a standard deep link to that provider using the amount and handle you enter — it hands you off to the provider's own app or site to complete payment. Split·App never processes, sees, or stores any payment itself; each provider's own privacy policy governs what happens once you leave this site.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes — for example, if a future feature required a server — this page will be updated and the "last updated" date above will change accordingly.
